Discrepancy between Tc-99m HMDP bone scan and F-18FDG positron emission tomographic images in a patient with small cell lung cancer

摘要
The authors staged small-cell lung cancer using conventional bone scanning and with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). The Tc-99m HMDP bone scan did not reveal bony abnormalities, whereas F-18 FDG showed many bone marrow metastases. A bone marrow biopsy of the iliac crest confirmed malignant cell infiltration. If a skeletal metastasis is confined to the marrow cavity, F-18 FDG can detect the bone marrow metastasis at an early stage before bone remodeling in surrounding bone can be detected on Tc-99m HMDP bone scans.
