Poly(2-oxepane-1,5-dione):: A highly crystalline modified poly(ε-caprolactone) of a high melting temperature

Aliphatic polyesters which have a poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) structure but are modified by one ketone function per monomer unit were synthesized. The polymerization mechanism is consistent with the coordination of aluminum propoxide to the exocyclic carbonyl oxygen of 1,4,8-trioxaspiro-9-undecanone, followed by the acyl-oxygen cleavage of the monomer and insertion into the Al-O bond of the initiator. Polymers with different molecular weight are obtained whose molecular weight distribution is symmetrical and narrow as confirmed by size exclusion chromatography. Compared to unmodified PCL, the synthesized polyester is photodegradeable, highly crystalline, and has a higher melting temperature.
