Modulation techniques have long played an important role in spectrometry. New technology is providing new ways to apply modulation techniques in spectrometry and imaging. This new technology is the digital micro-mirror array (DMA). The development of the DMA has already had an impact on Hadamard transform spectrometry (HTS) and Hadamard transform imaging (HTI). The DMA also provides opportunities for new developments in optical modulation techniques. A hypothetical example serves to illustrate the application to imaging studies of optical modulation via a DMA. A future plan is presented for hyperspectral imaging using two DMAs and a single-element detector. In this configuration DMA 1 is operational to provide spatial information and DMA 2 is operational to provide spectral information. A preliminary result illustrates the nature of the spatial information provided by one of the two DMAs (DMA 2). (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
