Resonance, polar, and steric effects of substituent on monomer reactivity in radical polymerization of alkyl 4-vinylbenzoate and butylacrylate

摘要
To study the overall effect of polar resonance, and steric factors on monomer reactivity, butylacrylate (BA) was copolymerized via conventional and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with styrene (St) and a series of alkyl 4-vinylbenzoates (AVBs). It was found that the steric effect becomes predominant in determining the reactivity of p-substituted St when the resonance and polar effects are kept nearly constant. Similar results observed for CFRP and ATRP indicated that the reactivity of these monomers is not affected to a significant extent by the change in initiator, solvent, and temperature.
