Strawberries are cultivated in over 4000 hectares in Finland (1994). The cultivated area increased 10% from the previous year, and it is the largest of the Nordic countries. Farms cultivating strawberries number 3,699. Most of them are small, less than one hectare in size. Farms over 5 hectares, number 254 and, there are 56 farms with over 10 hectares. Strawberry production in Finland averages 8 to 15 thousand tons per year. In 1994, 246 tons of fresh strawberries were imported into Finland, mainly from Belgium and Holland. At that time, Finland was not yet a member of the EC.
