Modification of polymers by gas treatment - I. Alcohol polymers and acid polymers

摘要
Reactive gases (NO, SF4 and NH3) as well as volatile compounds (CH3COCl and CH3OH) have been used to modify polymers containing polar functional groups. Ethylene-vinyl alcohol, and olefin-acrylic acid copolymers, have been converted into corresponding nitrites and acetates, acid fluorides, ammonium carboxylates and amides, respectively. The efficiency of the reaction was checked by transmission and reflection IR spectroscopy. Significant changes of both gas permeability and surface tension were also pointed out.
