CeO2 as a growth inhibitor of Y2BaCuO5 in a Ba3Cu5Ox liquid phase

Growth behavior of Y2BaCuO5 (211) second phase particle in a Ba3Cu5Ox liquid phase was investigated by applying the liquid infiltration technique to 211 powder compacts. Heating 211 compacts surrounded by the liquid-forming powders with or without CeO2 addition to 1100 degrees C and holding for various time periods up to 10 h, the liquid-forming powders melted and infiltrated into 211 compacts. The 211 coarsening in the infiltrated liquid phase with CeO2 addition was significantly suppressed compared to that in the liquid phase without CeO2 addition. It is concluded that CeO2 acts as a grain growth inhibitor for 211. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
