Thermoelectric properties of An+2COn+1O3n+3(A= ca, sr, Ba, n=1-5)

We studied the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline samples of the n = 1-5 members of the homologous series A(n+2)CO(n+1)O(3n+3), where A represents Ca, Sr, or an appropriate combination of Sr and Ba. The electrical resistivity (rho) decreased monotonically with increasing temperature in all samples. With increasing temperature, the Seebeck coefficient (S) of the n = 1 sample decreased, while S of the n = 2-5 samples increased up to about 900 K. The power factor (= S-2/rho) increased with temperature in all samples. The n = 2 sample exhibited the largest power factor, which was 0.76 muW/K-2 cm at 1070 K. The thermal conductivity (K) of this sample was very small, 1.3 W/K.m at 773 K, and the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT = (ST)-T-2/rhokappa) increased with temperature. By extrapolating K to high temperatures, ZT was estimated to reach 0.054 at 1070 K in the case of the n = 2 sample.
