An unusual (Ni16Na2I)-Na-II cluster which features formate as a bridging clamp between two octanuclear nickel cages is reported; preliminary magnetic studies exhibit paramagnetic low-lying states resulting from dominating antiferromagnetic interactions between the nickel(II) centers.
