Electric-field-induced ferroelastic single domaining of SrTi18O3

A method for engineering the nearly perfect single domain state in the ferroelastic phase of strontium titanate single crystal is presented. It combines shaping and the action of a strong dc electric field which is not conjugate with the order parameter. The single domain formation is attributed to domain wall motion due to anisotropic electrostriction, which switches residual odd-oriented domains into the axially oriented state. This feature seems to hint at ferrobielectric or ferroelastobielectric behavior. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.
