Spectroscopic characterization of a substituted phthalocyanine thin film deposited by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique

Langmuir-Blodgett films of Cu(II)-[tetrakis-(3,3-dimethyl-butoxycarbonyl] phthalocyanine are well ordered and exhibit a marked in;plane anisotropy. We have studied the molecular order of films grown from ethyl acetate and toluene spreading solutions, deposited on fused quartz and mylar substrates. Molecular orientations in the film have been determined by polarized UV-VIS absorption and EPR spectroscopies. We have found that the mean orientation of molecules in the film is different for the two spreading solutions and for the two substrates. In LB films deposited on mylar the ordered surface of the substrate is able to induce oriented growth of materials and it accounts for the observed in-plane orientation anisotropy of molecules packed in the film.
