Structural change in the economy, from agriculture to industry to services, causes similar sector shifts in final energy use. This paper illustrates such energy sector shifts for 11 world regions from 1971 through 1998 and discusses their impact on the decline in energy intensity. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
