Principles of drug disposition in pregnancy allow for estimations of fetal drug exposure following maternal gestation; therefore, prediction may be determined as to the effect of the drug on the fetus based on a knowledge of the dose response. This facilitates the safe use of drugs for therapeutic purposes and defines the risk for adverse effects on the fetus.
