Depletion-induced nonbirefringent banding in thin isotactic polystyrene thin films

摘要
Depletion-induced nonbirefringent banding in thin isotactic polystyrene thin films was analyzed. Nonbirefringent ring banded structures were observed when two optical micrographs of iPS thin films melt was crystallized at 160°C for 6 hours. The banding was associated with the change of specific volume upon crystallization from the polymer melt. The periodic banding is a result of the inability of the diffusive process replenishing melt at the growth front to keep up with the crystal growth velocity.
