Consumer demand and new technologies resulted in the continual improvement of skin cleansers. Soap-based products have been supplanted by bars formulated with synthetic detergents that offer improved skin compatibility, and some second-generation body washes now use sophisticated formulation, such as coacervate technology. This article reviews the history of modern skin cleansers, and discusses cleanser composition, including skin conditioners, other ingredients, and implements, and assessing cleanser effects.
