Planar defects and luminescence of BaTiO3 particles synthesized by a polymerized complex method

We used a polymerized complex technique to synthesize BaTiO3 particles. BaTiO3 particles processed at 500 degrees C for 8 h contained numerous planar defects as (111) twins. The defects were accompanied by a change in the oxidation state of the Ti atoms. The defect-formation behaviour observed in the present study differed from any seen previously. At liquid-nitrogen temperature, we observed an emission from the BaTiO3 containing planar defects. The emission hand maximum was at 520 nln, and the corresponding excitation band peaked at 280 nm. This emission and its relation to the change in the oxidation state of the Ti atoms was discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
