Synthesis of multicomponent Fe-based amorphous alloys with significant supercooled liquid region by mechanical alloying

Mechanical alloying was utilized to synthesize multicomponent Fe-Al-P-B-C alloys. The resulting phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and isothermal annealing experiments. Coexistence of an amorphous and a nanoscale b.c.c. phase with an average grain size of about IO MI was found after milling. The amorphous phase exhibits a rather wide supercooled liquid region before crystallization. Some characteristic thermal properties of the different alloys are presented and the composition dependence of the glass transition temperature, the crystallization temperature and the crystallization products are compared with data for rapidly quenched samples.
