Ligand isotope structure of the optical 7F0→5D0 transition in EuCl3•6H2O

The structure of the F-7(0)-> D-5(0) transition of Eu3+ in EuCl3 center dot 6H(2)O is investigated in crystals with three different isotopic compositions [natural abundance (0.2% O-18, 0.01% H-2), 1.9% O-18, and 0.06% H-2]. Raman-heterodyne-detected NMR is used to identify shifts caused by isotopes of the ligands O and H in sites neighboring the Eu site in the lattice. The structure of the F-7(0)-> D-5(0) transition is explained as a combination of the hyperfine structure of Eu-151 and Eu-153 and isotope shifts caused by Cl, O, and H.
