The formation of Pd carbide during the synthesis of vinyl acetate was investigated. The formation of carbide had resulted in the deactivation of Pd catalysts. The adsorption, desorption, and reaction of a number of organics on Pd (110), including ethene, acetic acid, vinyl acetate, and acetaldehyde were investigated. It was found that above 450 K the ethene continuously adsorbed on the Pd surfaces with high probability, even though the molecule decomposed to release hydrogen into the gas phase and deposited carbon atoms on the surfaces.
