The Sc-Nd-Si ternary system at 870K

Phase equilibria at 870 K in the Sc-Nd-Si ternary system have been established. Five ternary compounds occur in the system. They crystallize in the following structure types: ScNd2Si2 in the Mo2FeB2 type (sp. gr. P4/mbm, a=7.307(3), c=4.323(2) Angstrom), ScNdSi in the ScCeSi type (sp. gr. I4/mmm, a=4.292(2), c=15.580(8) Angstrom), Sc0.85-0.95Nd0.15-0.05Si1.67 in the AlB2 type (sp. gr. P6/mmm, a=3.6644-3.6596(1), c=3.8896-3.8860(1) Angstrom), Sc3.96Nd1.04Si4 in the Sm5Si4 type (sp. gr. Pnma, a=7.058(2), b=13.912(4), c=7.361(1) Angstrom). The crystal structure of the ScNd2Si3 compound is unknown. The Sc-Si, Nd-Si and Si-Si interatomic distances are contracted in these structures. Mutual substitution of Sc and Nd from 4 up to 15 at.% in Sc5Si3, NdSi and NdSi2-x silicides was observed in the ternary system. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
