Rebreathing systems can be used judiciously only by reducing the fresh gas flow rate considerably. The anesthesiologist, however, must have a clear understanding of how to cope with the specific characteristics of this anesthetic technique and how to overcome its shortcomings and possible disadvantages. Following the given guidelines and standardized schemes will enable the anesthesiologist to perform low-flow anesthesia safely in clinical practice.
