This paper reviews the existing concepts on the physiology of visceral pain and mechanisms of processing nociceptive stimuli at the level of sensor neurons of surface segments of the spinal dorsal horns. Data on the ion channels and receptors involved in the transduction of the pain signals are discussed. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2010.
