Effect of atmospheric emissions of the Vorkuta industrial region on the chemical composition of lake sediments

The chemical composition of lake sediments has been studied within the framework of TUNDRA International Project. Air-borne pollution by Vorkuta industrial enterprises has been found to promote an increase in the concentration of heavy (Hg, Cd, Pb, As), alkaline, and alkaline-earth metals in the lake sediments. Increased concentrations of metals have also been observed in the lake sediments accumulated in the 1930s. A certain time lag was found to exist between the changes in the above-mentioned metal concentrations in the lake sediments, on the one hand, and the dynamics of coal production by Vorkuta coal mines, on the other hand.
