DISTRIBUTION AND VIRULENCE OF PUCCINIA-CORONATA IN CANADA IN 1989

In 1989 oat crown rust was first observed in trace amounts on wild oats in Manitoba on July 25. The subsequent development of the rust was restricted due to hot and dry conditions. Only trace amounts of crown rust were found late in the growing season. Using 19 single-gene backcross lines as differentials, 54 virulence combinations of crown rust were identified in Manitoba in 1989. New isolates of crown rust capable of attacking plants with both resistance genes Pc38 and Pc39, including the current rust resistant cultivars of the prairies, were commonly isolated. These isolates were highly variable in virulence and occurred in 17 virulence combinations. From Ontario and Quebec, 34 virulence combinations were identified. As in recent years, isolates with virulence to Pc39 were the most prevalent in this region and occurred in 25 virulence combinations. In 1989 virulence was not detected to resistance genes Pc48, Pc58, Pc60, Pc61, Pc63, Pc67, and Pc68 in eastern Canada, and in the prairie region virulence was not detected to Pc48, Pc61, and Pc68.
