Application of VHF-radio and satellite telemetry techniques on elephants in northern Cameroon

Two young adult elephant cows, belonging to the population of the Waza National Park in northern Cameroon were tracked for twenty-one and ten months respectively, using collars with VHF-radio and satellite transmitters. One cow used mainly the central and northwestern parts of the park, but migrated as far as 80 km north of the park during the dry season. The other cow used mainly the southeastern parts of the park, but migrated as far as 100 km south of the park in the wet season. Home ranges (Minimum Convex Polygon) were 3066 and 2484 km(2), respectively. Movement and activity patterns are discussed in relation to local conditions.
