SHRINKAGE OF FLUOROZIRCONATE GLASS-FIBERS AT LOW-TEMPERATURES

Heavy-metal fluoride glass fibers were subjected to sub-sub-Tg annealing. The glasses possessed Tg values in the range 260-320°C whereas the low-temperature heat treatments ranged from 100-200°C. The heat treatments were performed in a dry box. The fibers exhibited axial shrinkage at temperatures as low as 100°C. The shrinkage increased with heat treatment temperature such that ZBLA glass fibers exhibited 0.3% axial shrinkage at 200°C. It is suggested that the shrinkage of fluorozirconate glass fibers may well be related to the large specific volume of the fibers as compared to the bulk glass. © 1990.
