A SIMPLE THEORETICAL-MODEL FOR THE HYDROGEN ELECTROSORPTION ON PLATINUM IN ACID-MEDIUM

The three-state lattice gas model with nearest-neighbour pairwise interactions is used within the mean-field approximation to describe the coadsorption equilibrium of hydrogen and anions on platinum surfaces in acid medium. By using a superposition of Frumkin-Fowler isotherms, experimental voltammograms of Pt(100) in H2SO4 and HClO4 are decomposed into distinct adsorption peaks which are then analysed in terms of the coadsorption model. It is shown that the adsorption competition between hydrogen and specifically adsorbed anions can account for the narrowing and the shift in potential of the peak corresponding to the strongly bound adsorption state of hydrogen.
