LOW-INTENSITY SMOKING CESSATION INTERVENTION AMONG AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN CIGARETTE SMOKERS - A PILOT-STUDY

Sixty-six African-American women were recruited from community and work settings in a large Midwestern city and randomly assigned to one of two quit smoking groups or a control group. The first quit smoking group received weekly mailings of quit smoking materials for 4 weeks and periodic telephone support calls from a lay facilitator. The second group received one-time advice to quit smoking. The control group received the intervention at the end of the study. None of the women in any group quit smoking. Cotinine levels dropped for all three groups from baseline to 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Number of cigarettes per day dropped continuously for the two intervention groups but not the control group.
