THE RELATIONSHIP OF STANDARD LENGTH AND OTOLITH DIAMETER IN LARVAL BAY ANCHOVY, ANCHOA-MITCHILLI (VAL) - A SHRINKAGE ESTIMATOR

The standard length of laboratory-reared and net-collected larvae of the bay anchovy, Anchoa mitchilli (Val.), and the diameter of its saggital otoliths were examined to estimate the amount of shrinkage in length occurring during net collection in Biscayne Bay, Florida [USA]. Larval lengths are an exponential function of otolith diameter. Net-collected larvae averaged 22 to 30% shorter than laboratory-reared larvae at given otolith diameters because of shrinkage in length during collection at sea. The relationship between shrinkage of larvae and length of larvae was derived from regressions of larval length with otolith diameter for laboratory-reared and net-collected larvae.
