CONFORMATIONAL EFFECTS ON SIGMA-CONJUGATION - UV AND IR-SPECTRA OF MATRIX-ISOLATED TRANS-N-SI4ME10 AND GAUCHE-N-SI4ME10

摘要
In rare ps matrices, gauche-Si4Me10 and trans-Si4Me10 have distinct IR and very different UV spectra, permitting selective phototransformations of one or the other into Si3Me8 and SiMe2 with monochromatic light, and separation of the spectra. t-Si4Me10 shows the expected red-shift relative to Si3Me8, but g-Si4Me10 does not. The consequences of this observation for simple theories of sigma-conjugation are analyzed and an extension of the popular Sandorfy C model is proposed. Implications for conformationally induced segmentation of polysilane chains into weakly interacting chromophores are noted.
