A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF RING IMAGING CHERENKOV COUNTERS

In this survey we discuss the development of Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) counters for particle identification. Since 1977, it has been based on the use of gaseous photosensors in detectors with gaseous amplification (MWPC and MSAC) and sensitive to single UV photons. The detectors are classified into three groups, each developed over the last sixteen years, but based on different techniques and readout methods. The main developments, and the principal operating RICH detectors, are described and critically analyzed in order to compare their respective absolute performances. The newer detector designs and photosensors are also discussed. The aim of this historical survey is to give an overview of the technique, even if not completely exhaustive, in order to help in understanding RICH counters, their problems and their possibilities.
