The Solar Energy Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, and Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, are developing solar technology for the destruction of hazardous chemical wastes. The processes being investigated utilize concentrated solar flux to carry out photochemical oxidation of hazardous organic compounds or to provide energy for catalytic steam reforming of similar compounds. Laboratory work and experiments in solar furnaces have demonstrated the capability to effectively destroy a wide range of types of organic compounds utilizing these processes.
