2 KINETIC-MODELS FOR THE GROWTH OF SMALL DROPLETS FROM GAS-MIXTURES

We consider the growth of a small, but already macroscopic, liquid droplet in a gas mixture consisting of the corresponding supersaturated vapor and a high percentage of a carrier gas insoluble in the liquid. We treat the vapor by two simple model kinetic equations: the Klein-Kramers equation, appropriate when the vapor molecules are much heavier than those of the carrier gas, and a version of the linearized BGK model, applicable in the opposite limit. These kinetic equations are solved by the moment expansion method in the presence of an absorbing sphere representing the droplet. The hierarchy of moment equations is truncated according to a prescription recently proposed by Hubmer and Titulaer. We obtain good convergence with increasing order of truncation, down to very low values of the droplet radius; at the point of breakdown our results for the rate of condensation are within a few percent of the known exact limit for zero radius. Our results also agree with the known exact results at high radii. At intermediate radii the estimated error is at worst about one percent. © 1990.
