CHRONOCOULOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS OF CAPACITIVE CHARGE IN THE PRESENCE OF FARADAIC CONTRIBUTIONS

摘要
An improvement over the Chronocoulometric method for measuring absolute values of capacitive charge as described by Foresti et al. (J. Electroanal. Chem., 109 (1980) 15) is reported and applied to a Hg dropping electrode immersed in aqueous NaF. A double-potential-step and a single-potential-step chronocoulometric procedure for correcting capacitive charge measurements for large faradaic contributions are described. Applications to capacitive charge measurements at a dropping Ga electrode immersed in a pH 3.5 solution of 0.5 M (Na2SO4 + H2SO4 are reported, in which the faradaic charge due to hydrogen evolution is corrected for. Progressive additions of aliphatic alcohols to a neutral solution of 0.5 M Na2SO4 are shown to determine the formation of a submonolayer of Ga oxides at increasingly positive potentials. © 1990.
