Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was evaluated as an alternative procedure to conventional solvent extraction for the determination of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from soil. High recoveries were obtained for all spiked compounds, representing levels of chlorination from tetrathrough octachloro congeners. A comparison of SFE with conventional solvent extraction using a soil known to contain dioxins indicated that the levels obtained by SFE were approximately 30-50 percent of the levels observed using Soxhlet techniques. Although additional optimization is necessary, the preliminary data indicate that SFE could be a viable alternative to solvent extraction. © 1990.
