THERMALIZATION OF POSITRONIUM IN LIQUIDS - TIME-DEPENDENCE AND INFLUENCE OF A CHEMICAL-REACTION

Taking advantage of the magnetic field effect on positronium (Ps), the kinetic energy of this particle is measured in various solvents at different ages of Ps, using both the lifetime spectroscopy (LS) and the Doppler broadening of the annihilation radiation line shape (DBARL) techniques. The solvent is shown to influence both the Ps initial energy and its slowing down. Thermalization of Ps may last up to about 2 +/- 0.5 ns. In addition, the kinetic energy of Ps after a chemical spin conversion reaction is determined. The Ps atoms emerging from the reaction cage appear to be fully thermalized.
