ALUMINUM DEPLETION PROFILES IN OXIDIZED NIAL SINGLE-CRYSTALS

Selective oxidation of NiAl leads to a depletion of aluminium in the metal near the oxide-metal interface. Depletion profiles after 50-500 h oxidation in air at 1223 K were measured by electron probe micro-analysis. The concentration-dependent interdiffusion coefficient was estimated from the profiles by means of a modified Boltzmann-Matano analysis. The interdiffusivity as a function of concentration shows a broad minimum at about 49 at% Al, which is smaller than data reported for polycrystalline NiAl. The variation of the interfacial concentration in the course of oxidation correlates with the varying scale growth rate with a maximum at 200 h, which is presumably related to the transformation of the metastable alumina phases to alpha-Al2O3.
