IMAGING AN ATOMIC-BEAM IN 2 DIMENSIONS

摘要
A fluorescence detection scheme is applied to image the intensity distribution of an atomic beam in two dimensions and in real time. The atoms pass orthogonally through a 20-mu-m thin sheet of light produced by a laser diode, which is resonant with an atomic transition frequency. The fluorescence of the atoms is then monitored with an intensified CCD-camera. This imaging method can be state selective, velocity selective and isotope selective. A spatial resolution of 30-mu-m has been demonstrated. Applications in the field of two-dimensional atomic optics are being considered. The performance of our detection system is illustrated in a rubidium beam focusing experiment.
