COMPARISON OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ANISOTROPY EFFECTS ON POTENTIAL OF ZERO CHARGE AND ELECTRONIC WORK FUNCTION FOR GOLD (111), (311), (110) AND (210) ORIENTATIONS

摘要
In a first step clean surface structures of Au{111}, Au{311}, Au{110} and Au{210} orientations are studied by LEED. Only the {210} orientation does not exhibit a surface reconstruction. Contact potential ΔΦAu{hkl} of each orientation is then determined using a vibrating condensator. The electronic work function ΦAu{111} by photoemission. In a second step, after an electrochemistry-UHV transfer, the potential of zero charge EAu{hkl}σ = 0 of each orientation is measured. After a back transfer, Auger-LEED studies show that all orientations have a (1 × 1) surface structure in solution. We deduce that the anisotropy effect difference between ΔΦAu{hkl}/{210} and ΔEAu{hkl}/{210} is probably mainly due to a surface reconstruction phenomenon. © 1990.
