摘要
The water adsorption of several alumina pillared montmorillonites (Al-PILCs) at room temperature was investigated. The porosity, characterized by Nz adsorption and X-ray diffraction, and the surface nature of the Al-PILCs are the dominant factors influencing the adsorption, Although the adsorption regimes are different, a linear relationship between the micropore volumes was derived from N-2 and water adsorption, By exchanging with various cations, the surface of the Al-PILCs become hydrophilic and their water adsorption is significantly improved, particularly in the low relative pressure region, However, the ions introduced into the Al-PILC may cause changes in porosity, particularly in micropores. Indeed, a decrease in the surface area and micropore volume by an exchange with Li+ and Mg2+ ions is observed and attributed to the Hoffmann-Klemen effect, the irreversible migration of small cations upon heating to the vacant octahedral sites in the clay layers, Accordingly, the water capacities of these samples are lower compared to the samples exchanged with Na+ and Ca2+ ions, The water capacity of Ca2+ exchanged sample is highest among the Al-PILC samples, It is about 2/3 of that of zeolite 5A at a P/P-0 of 0.3.
