THE SURVIVAL AND REVIVAL OF NONWAGE LABOR IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY

This article analyses the survival and revival of non-wage forms of production in contemporary agriculture and draws parallels between non-wage labour in agriculture and industry. Criticisms are presented of research that tends to erase differences between capitalist production and petty commodity production. An analysis of contract farming is used to develop an alternative argument that only by recognizing the different economic logics and political implications of wage- and non-wage labour can one explain natural and social barriers to capitalist development, and the survival and revival of non-wage forms of production.
