摘要
This paper briefly reviews some national studies and new national programs to illustrate the renewed interest in hypersonic flight. The flight environment that will be encountered by this new class of hypersonic vehicles is described, and the fluid-dynamic and chemical phenomena that occur in hypersonic flight are examined. Each of these phenomena presents computational challenges new or more severe to computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The limitations of our ground-based facilities relative to code validation serve to highlight the need for an improved level of understanding of computational methodology.
