COMPARATIVE-STUDY OF WEIGHTED UPWIND AND 2ND-ORDER UPWIND DIFFERENCE-SCHEMES

An extensive survey of difference schemes for approximating the advection terms in the conservation equations of fluid flow and heat transfer was conducted. In this study, two of these schemes, the weighted upwind and the second-order upwind difference schemes (WUDS and SOUDS, respectively), were tested by application to four problems, two of which have not previously been used. The problems involve two-dimensional forced and mixed convection and the predictions were compared with experimental data and/or analytical solutions. The results concur with previous findings and indicate that the SOUDS produces less numerical diffusion than the WUDS and gives predictions in closer agreement with the analytical or experimental data. © 1990 by Hemisphere Publishing Corporation.
