In small autonomous energy systems the wind power penetration may reduce drastically the cost of the produced energy. The solution of the short term scheduling problem faces great difficulties because of the randomness of wind speed and the resulting randomness of the wind generators production. This paper describes an algorithm developed at the National Technical University of Athens for determining the optimal operation scheduling over a period of T hours for an autonomous energy system consisting of diesel units and wind generators (WECs). The proposed method requires the solution of the following two problems: a) The short term forecasting of load and wind velocity b) The short term unit commitment. Results from the application of the proposed method to the system of a medium size Greek island are reported.
