Study of the fine structure of the algae Chara foetida in a vertical and in a horizontal position resulted in a hypothesis of the possible action mechanism of statolites which postulates that statolites in geotropic position of the cell block the normal transport route of golgi vesicles on the underside and stimulated on the top side. The functioning of statolites and of the Golgi apparatus can probably be understood as a simple self-regulating system.
