Time-varying, digital band-pass filters are extensively used in seismic data processing, since the dominant frequency of reflected signals usually becomes lower and their bandwidth narrower with the passage of time. A practical realization of a time-varying, digital, band-pass filter with continuous variation of the cutoff frequencies is described. This specific recursive filter, based on a Butterworth frequency characteristic, has a small number of weighting coefficients, which can be expressed as functions of the desired cutoff frequencies and asymptotic cutoff rate.
