ABRASIVE WEAR-RESISTANCE - THE EFFECTS OF PLOWING AND THE REMOVAL OF PLOWED MATERIAL

In an earlier paper it was suggested that the wear resistance of a metal would be proportional to H//s/(1 - f//p) where H//s is the hardness of the wear surface and 1 - f//p is the fraction of a wear groove removed from the wear surface. However, the expression derived for 1 - f//p could not explain the abrasive wear resistance of very ductile materials. In this work it is proposed that the abrasive wear resistance will scale as H//s/(1 - f)//e//f//f and an expression for (1 - f)//e//f//f has been derived. An initial assessment using data from the literature for values of H//s and to evaluate (1 - f)//e//f//f suggests the proposed scaling is reasonable. However, geometric considerations suggest the approach underestimates (1 - f)//e//f//f for metals of low work-hardening capacity.
