SINIAN PALEOMAGNETIC RESULTS FROM THE TARIM BLOCK, WESTERN CHINA

摘要
A Sinian (latest Precambrian) section composed of shallow marine carbonates, nonmarine clastics, tillites and minor volcanic rocks, is exposed in Wushi, along the northwestern margin of the Tarim block of China. Paleomagnetic results from this section reveal at least six geomagnetic field reversals. A comparison between Sinian and Devonian paleomagnetic data suggests little net paleolatitude shift during the Early Paleozoic for Tarim. The low inclinations from layers strati-graphically above and below the tillites indicate that they were magnetized in shallow (8-degrees +/- 6-degrees) paleolatitudes (north or south). Precise magnetostratigraphic correlation with other Sinian sections is hampered by difficulty in recovering a complete paleomagnetic record, disconformities and unconformities within the section, and a complex mixed polarity interval.
