EFFECT OF BORON ION-IMPLANTATION ON THE OXIDATION BEHAVIOR OF 3-DIMENSIONAL CARBON-CARBON COMPOSITE

摘要
A three-dimensional carbon-carbon composite was implanted with high-energy boron ions. Oxidation kinetics of the untreated and treated composite were studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Chemical analysis was performed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning auger spectroscopy. Morphologies of the oxidized surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Boron implantation increased the initial oxidation temperature from 550-degrees-C to 700-degrees-C and reduced the low-temperature oxidation rate by two orders of magnitude. The mechanism of inhibition appears to be a combination of specific site blockage by boron oxide and electron transfer.
