Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a group of naturally occurring inducible proteins that belong to the transforming growth factor beta supergene family. The strong osteoinductive property of the BMPs has led to the development of a commercially available recombinant (rh) BMP2 (INFUSE). To date, there have been no studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of rhBMP2 for foot and ankle applications. This article (the first of its kind) reports on the preliminary results of a prospective intention-to-treat study of rhBMP2 in high-risk foot and ankle surgery patients and describes several techniques for the use of rhBMP2.
